Match MVP Hanna Salomäki tallied 21 kills and 2 blocks to lead our team to an exciting 2-3 (25-22, 16-25, 25-22, 20-25, 10-15) opening match of the SM-Playoffs against Svedala on Wednesday night in Gisle sportcenter.

The SM-Quarterfinal series is best of five matches, and continues with two away matches played in Svedala on Sunday 20 March and Tuesday 22 March. A possible fourth match will see that SM-playoff action returns to Gislaved, with the final deciding match to be played in Svedala.

Each set in the match was close and both teams played with very high levels of intensity. In the first set, we battled point-for-point, but a Svedala service ace would send them to a three-point lead 12-15. A string of Svedala errors gave us a chance to narrow the gap, until another tough serve pushed them up 16-19. Hanna Salomäki answered taking five points, together with a service ace from Ida Lindbäck, to take the first set 25-22.

Svedala jumped out to a 3-7 lead to start the second set. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to hold the same level of focus in our execution, missing seven serves in the set, allowing Svedala cruise to win 16-25.

After the break, we returned refreshed and refocused, jumping out to an early lead. With a more balanced offense and patience in long rallies, we were able to catch Svedala by surprise, taking set three 25-22. Set four looked to be history repeating itself, with Svedala taking a 1-6 lead, that quickly turned to 11-17, but the match was not over. Tough serves with a service ace from Mathilda Carlsson helped narrow the gap to 15-18, followed by aggressive net plays from Meghan Sherman kept us within reach at 19-22. Unfortunately, it would not be enough, with Svedala taking the set 20-25, forcing a fifth deciding set.

Svedala came out hot in the fifth set, leading 2-6, before we would rally back to tie the score 7-7. After the side-switch, we exchanged points with both teams attacking hard and making some spectacular defensive plays to stay alive. Despite being tied 10-10, the winds were with Svedala as they took the match by final score of 10-15.

SM-Playoffs return to action on Sunday in Svedala sporthall.
